As the most prestigious meet in racing, Saratoga is a Mecca for every stable in the country. They send their best runners here. Purses are bigger. Payoffs are bigger, and with every horse a contender, the average bettor gets killed at the windows. That’s why it’s called the Graveyard of Favorites. But the other side of that coin is, it’s also longshot heaven! Because you can’t have all those losers without having some monster winners. And I’m going to show you who, what, when, where, how and why!
I'm JOHN CONTE, the only public handicapper to win a major national championship... The $500,000 first-place prize and title of Handicapper of the Year in the 10th annual Daily Racing Form/NTRA National Handicapping Championship at the Red Rock Resort in Las Vegas. I also received the Eclipse Award for Handicapper of the Year last January.
John beat a field of 302 handicappers, who competed over the two-day finals of the tournament, the culmination of a yearlong series of qualifying tournaments at racetracks, OTBs, casinos and websites with featuring over 100,000 entrants.
My racing credentials are as solid as any handicapper in the country. I'm more than just a numbers and figures guy... I'm on a first-name basis with owners, trainers riders and jockey agents and I'm as much at home on the backstretch as in the owner's box.
My strong suit is not mathematics or systems - but that I know the horses and what makes them run. I know the breed and I know the individuals. From their foaling dates to their form cycles... I know their best distances, favorite surface and their running style. I know who's ready, who's been specially prepped and who's got the conditioning, who's peaking at the right time. I pay special attention to bi-coastal trainers who have supplied big winners on both coasts and I am on a first-name basis with everybody of importance in the game.
John has been a celebrated racing expert for more than 20 years with the New York Post, Daily Racing Form, and now an Official New York Off Track Betting Analyst. Also, he is the only newspaper handicapper in the 135-year history of New York Racing to show a Flat Bet Profit of several thousand dollars over an entire race meeting; and to prove it was no fluke he showed a big profit, not once, but three times, a fact noted by former NYRA Communications Director Dan O'Leary, who wrote, "Mr. Conte finished each of the last three NYRA race meetings with a Plus Figure."
From Turf Expert at the New York Post and the Daily Racing Form to National Handicapping Champion and now at Nassau OTB, John Conte has seen it all in racing. And to the folks that know the most about the game, John Conte is the "Gold Standard".
SCOTT FINEY, Daily Racing Form "John Conte is the only public handicapper ever to show a net profit for an entire New York racing season; Not once but three times. (Saratoga, Belmont, or Aqueduct)... Even more remarkable is Conte's record with Exactas. A 3-horse exacta box, yielded a flat bet profit".
JERRY BAILEY Hall of Fame Jockey and Current ESPN thoroughbred analyst "With John Conte, the Grass is Always Greener... So is the Money".
RICHARD DUTROW Kentucky Derby winning Trainer of Big Brown "John Conte wins because he picks the right spots".
