I’ve written dozens of handicapping books and systems, I’ve been a columnist for DRF, and am the Director of Player Development and Official Lead Handicapper for NY OTB (Nassau County)...
BUT NEVER IN MY MORE THAN 20 YEARS ON THE JOB HAVE I HAD AN INSIGHT SO IMPORTANT TO ME AND THE AVERAGE EVERY DAY PLAYERS AS THE SPARK THAT STARTED THIS POWERFUL BOOK.
Dear Racing Fan:
Sometimes an “insider” like me, Noel Michaels, gets so close to the action that we can’t see the obvious even when it’s right in front of our eyes.
This book (which I believe to be the most important racing information I have ever put on paper) is testimony to that fact. Since I started years ago as the Daily Racing Form’s youngest handicapper and through periods of being a columnist, author, seminar speaker & host, owning a share of a Breeders’ Cup Winner and now OTB official, I have known, but never paid much attention to the following facts:
While trainers get day pay, and hot walkers, grooms and track officials get salaries and exercise riders get a fee for each horse they get on, jockeys pay is ridiculously low ($100 an also ran and the agent gets $10 of that) unless they win. As a rider once told me, “it’s a living but not real money”
Think long and hard on this fact—Ride the winner of the Kentucky Derby or Preakness and earn about $65,000. Run 5th in the same race and make $100. So, the obvious fact is that jocks and their agents have the most to gain (and lose) if they don’t do their handicapping homework in advance of a race.
I’m amazed this basic fact never really registered in my mind before. I’m friends and have worked with or interviewed such great jockeys as Ramon Dominguez, Javier Castellano, John Velazquez, Junior Alvarado and Angel Cordero, Jr. who called me “OTB’s Best Handicapper”. From my work, I know almost every rider on the New York circuit well enough to get a nod and a hello when we pass.
And, I’ve interviewed riders from all over the country in my capacity as columnist, writer, TV host and author and OTB official. And, of course, as a horse owner, I’ve talked to jocks who wanted to ride or did ride the horses I owned a piece of.
The fact that Jockeys MUST WIN to get a decent paycheck just took a while to sink in, I guess.
Of course, no jockey wins every race or even 50% of them. And, even weak riders sometimes get a live mount. But, I know racing from the ground up. I’ve studied every angle known to man on the game. I’m the author of best sellers like “Profiting from Distance Changes” and the “Handicapping Contest Handbook” (DRF Press).
But my best work that I am a proven expert in has to do with my “Angles” book series, from “Winning Angles A To Z” to the “Players’ Angle Almanac”. I’ve always had the ability to find the patterns of activity that lead to winners on the track.
It hit me like a sledgehammer—That I might be missing one of the most profitable angles in the game.
My first inclination was to roll up my sleeves and go to work. But then, I realized HOW EASY the jocks and their agents had made my job.
They do all the work.
I am still shaking my head.
And if we can READ ENGLISH and UNDERSTAND A Past Performance Line, the WINNER is as PLAIN AS DAY.
The Handicapping is done by professionals who need to win to eat. Throw away your calculators, pencils, trip notes. Forget hours of handicapping track variants, Beyer figs and researching bloodlines.
After all, here’s what has happened before a jockey gets on a horse to race:
As I have said already, THEY DO ALL THE WORK!
Now, here’s HOW WE MAKE MONEY FROM IT!
I didn’t just come up with a dozen angles and cough up a few winners. I battle tested over 50 different situations before settling on these 12. Some are POSITIVE RIDER MOVES that point out horses ready to win. And others are negative rider changes that save you money by stopping you from backing sure losers, no matter how logical their form looks in the past performances.
And in the book I devote an entire chapter to each Angle with easy to understand examples. You’ll learn how to spot the RIGHT TIME when each of these jockey moves is about to explode.
HERE’S WHAT A TRIAL RUN OVER A FEW DAYS TURNED UP
Angle 1: SWITCH BACK TO A TOP JOCK WHO RODE THE HORSE BEFORE
Under specific circumstances that I spell out for you, this is a highly profitable move.
Example: Blind Hope paid $20 in a short 5 horse field at Belmont May 24
Angle 2: SWITCH FROM A TOP RIDER TO A JOURNEYMAN WHO PREVIOUSLY RODE THE HORSE
Again in certain situations this is a very positive factor
Example: Agility Paid $28.40 at Hollywood Park May 12
Angle 3: SWITCHING RIDERS AND UPGRADING FROM JOURNEYMAN
Why does a horse that looks like nothing on paper attract a leading rider? I’ll explain it.
Example: One Smokin’ Cat $11.40 at Belmont May 18
Angle 4: UPGRADING TO TOP JOCKEY IN CERTAIN RACES ON THE CARD
I found a specific situation where upgrading to a top rider indicated a winning effort.
Example: Vperyod Seryoga won $16.40 at Arlington May 17
Angle 5: SWITCH TO A LEADING RIDER OFF A VERY BAD PREVIOUS RACE
Somebody knows something in spots. Leading riders don’t usually get on sure losers
Example: Yankee In Dixie $13.60 at Belmont May 12
Angle 6: TOP JOCK KEEPING THE MOUNT ON A CHEAP OR LOSING HORSES
Cheap horses can get a rider hurt. Under what conditions does a top rider stay aboard?
Example: Bairn cashed $12.80 at Belmont May 27
Angle 7: TOP RIDER STAYS DESPITE A VERY POOR EFFORT LAST RACE BY THE HORSE
Maybe the pp’s aren’t accurate! Maybe there was trouble! Top riders don’t have to stay
Example: Mississippi Duel won $13.80 at Belmont May 27
Angle 8: JOCKEY’S ONLY MOUNT ON THE CARD
Super strong angle, especially when the rider is coming in from another track to ride the horse. If you overlook this angle, you could miss a very big score.
Example: Calidoscopio $17.00 at Belmont June 7
Angle 9: HORSE FINALLY WON — SAME JOCKEY RIGHT BACK
A longtime losing horse suddenly wakes up under a rider! Many times, jocks get the win and move on to other horses, but if they feel that horse has “more in the tank,” they’ll stay on board and often those horses can go from “also rans” to a multi-race winning streak.
Example: War Bird $7.40 at Arlington May 24
Angle 10: TOP RIDER ON A FIRST-TIME STARTER
Some leading riders are under contract to trainers (best Example: John Velezquez and Todd Pletcher) and have to ride their firsters, but other riders rarely do because a young horse can be very unpredictable. The key is to find a top rider on a firster for a small to medium outfit in which all the money is going to the “big name” trainers who send out a lot of winning first timers. The public has more faith in the trainers’ reps than the rider’s ability in these cases.
Example: Evening News won $29.00 at Hollywood Park June 6
Angle 11: CHOOSING ONE HORSE OVER MULTIPLE POSSIBILITIES IN A RACE
If a rider has several possible mounts, his choice is crucial in some spots
Example: Coaltown Legend $12.40 Belmont June 7
Angle 12: THE APPRENTICE ANGLE
In some situations, the switch is a sure signal that the horse is live
Example: Kim’s Reward $27.00 at Churchill Downs May 23
Every one of those 12 Methods is examined in-depth and with many more examples than I’ve listed here. And not all are at major tracks. I also pulled examples from Louisiana Downs and other race tracks to PROVE THIS IS A VIABLE METHOD THAT IS PROFITABLE NO MATTER WHERE YOU PLAY.
THESE METHODS WORK... AND YOU DON’T HAVE TO...
Why stay up night after night or get up early to study the PP’s for hours? The jockeys and their agents have done all this work for you DAYS IN ADVANCE. All you have to do is interpret their decision and KEY ON THE PROFITABLE 12 ANGLES and then CASH YOUR TICKETS.
It really is that easy. They don’t eat or live well if they don’t win. So you know the rider and his agent are NOT FOOLING AROUND. This is life & death and family for them.
I’ll take you by the hand and show you step by step, how each angle fits to find a winner...
Of course, there WILL NOT be a play in every race.
But that’s to your advantage too. You’ll only be playing HIGH WIN PERCENTAGE RACES and not throwing your money away on “maybe”or “no chance” bets. You’ll always know EXACTLY WHAT THE PLAY IS when the condition I describe present themselves.
