John DaSilva Keeneland Report
Wednesday, April 4

Just when Gulfstream is winding down to 4 day weeks for a bit, Aqueduct is running 3 days and the weather throughout the mid-Atlantic states and the northeast hangs on the way we wish some of our speed horses would, ALONG COMES THE SPRING MEET AT KEENELAND. And not a day too soon.

When I was the analyst there I wrote many a feature exclusively for the NY Post during my 19 record breaking years as their handicapper. I still hold the record for most wins and highest Return On Investment of any competitors and I am now writing and handicapping exclusively at National Race Masters.

This Friday, Keeneland will run the first of their 16 day-meet (April 6-27.) The highlight of the day is the Transylvania Stakes, a mile and a sixteenth turf race for 3-year olds. Then on the first Saturday players will begin delving into the non-stop value presented by an 11 Race Program which features 5 KEY STAKES RACES:

Race 6 – Commonwealth Stakes - 7 Furlongs – 4-Year Old & Up
Race 7 – Shakertown Stakes – 5 ½ Furlongs Turf – 3-Year Old & Up
Race 8 – Madison Stakes – 7 Furlongs – F&M 4-Year Old & Up
Race 9 – Ashland Stakes – (Kentucky Oaks Prep) – 1 1/16th Miles 3-Year Old Fillies
Race 10 – Blue Grass Stakes – (Derby Prep) 3-Year Olds

In the headline I said that the Keeneland Meet and in particular opening weekend was “BIG SCORE” TIME. And indeed it was.

On Friday last year the Transylvania Stakes saw Big Score pull the upset at $22.40. But that was just the topper as 7-10 favorite Oscar Performance checked in 5th and with Holiday Stone second the Exacta paid $328.80, with Makarios third the Trifecta paid $4,962.80 and with 5-2 second choice Ticonderoga fourth the Superfecta paid $20,696.20

And that was just a taste because on Saturday, three of the five stakes races also delivered boxcar payoffs.

Shakertown Stakes – Holding Gold – WIN $38.20…Green Mask – 2nd Exacta $189.80…Hogy – 3rd Trifecta $652.80…Partly Mocha – 4th Superfecta $4,308.80

Ashland Stakes – Sailor’s Valentine – WIN $46.40…Daddy’s Lil darling – 2nd Exacta $278.40…Someday Soon – 3rd Trifecta $4,028.40…Tapped – 4th Superfecta $19,080.80

Blue Grass Stakes – Irap – WIN $64.80…Practical Joke – 2nd Exacta $328.60…McCraken – 3rd Trifecta $1,022.60…J Boy’s Echo – 4th Superfecta $4,297.80

Those results also contributed to the following rolling returns in the 5 race Sequence.

4 Daily Doubles - $168.60…$129.80…$155.40…$973.60
3 Pick Three’s - $617.40…$2,841.40…$3,070.29
Pick Four - $76,683.40
Pick Five - $256,412.80

If you aren’t excited by the kind of potential this Keeneland Meet provides for players then don’t read any further. But if you are chomping at the bit for the beginning to the Spring Meet then I’ll tell you right now, I see the same kind of Friday-Saturday Payoffs from the exact same Stakes Schedule opening weekend.

I am always disappointed when this short meet ends. But year in and year out the full fields of top level racing, the preponderance of grass racing, the introduction of early juvenile racing and the horse for course specialties which provide many overlay opportunities more than makes up for the lesser number of days.

All you need do is look at the charts from last year’s Spring Meet to realize why this race meet is so kind to horse players. Whether on dirt or turf. Whether sprinting or routing. There is no bias. A horse will sprint wire-to-wire then two races later a horse will rally from 7th or 8th. One turf route race will see another pace setter control the race followed by a stalker and then a closer.

I have always made sure to connect with multiple sources for this meet. From backstretch clockers to numbers crunchers to long time Keeneland trend handicappers and those linked to the mind of the stable. But every year the results validate the work.

It begins Friday. And let me leave you with one more incentive. Last year on opening Friday and Saturday there were 21 races. The favorite won 7 times or 33%, just below the national average for favorites of 36.9%. The average win mutuel paid $16.10 and the average exacta returned $134.10
