I'm sure you know by now that I am not only a public handicapper, one who among other things can lay claim to winning a number of national handicapping contest, including the initial $500,000 NTRA/DRF CHAMPIONSHIP, but most important of all, I make my living betting horses.

I bring this up because I receive many e-mails or tweets along the same lines.

Here is one I received Monday.

"John, you often say that betting the horses correctly is just as important as having the right horses to begin with. Can you give me an example of what you mean?" ED D., New York.
The best way I can answer that is to point to the horses I released to my clients at Saratoga on Wednesday and tell you the results and how I bet them. Remember, it isn't how many races you win or the kind of races you is whether or not you turn a profit, which is why I am very serious when I say PLAY THE HORSES I PLAY and MAKE THE MONEY I MAKE.

On Wednesday I had three winning races at Saratoga.

In Race 4 Alabama Bound had by far the best early speed in the race and in fact was the only runner in the mile and a sixteenth turf MSW race that had ever had the lead at first and second call in any career race. She figured to control the race so I released her as a single play and she returned $5.80 when she should have been odds-on.

As I said, that was a simple single bet and I almost tripled my investment.

Races 7 and 8 demanded a different betting pattern. I had no doubt at all that Filly & Mare BC Sprint Winner and multiple graded stakes winner WAVELL AVENUE was going to dominate Race 8 at Odds-On so an individual win bet on her was not the key to making a profit. What was the key was that I could use her on the back end of the Daily Double in Races 7 and 8.

In Race 7 I used three horses and my third choice, ORIENT HARBOR was the winner and paid $15.00. WAVELL AVENUE indeed controlled Race 8 and was odds-on to return only $3.00.

This is where the proper betting comes in. Since WAVELL AVENUE was on the back end of the Daily Double she was a single. That meant that I bet three horses in race 7 hooked to her in race 8. Based on a $2 wager my $6 investment returned $24.80. That quadrupled the investment.

Of course I also had an Exacta Box in race 7 so was minus $12 based on the $2 wager. However, all in all Wednesday tuned out, based on those three races to be profitable.

A total (based on $2 wagers in the 3 mentioned races) investment of $20 and a return of $30.60. That means you received a Return On Investment of $3.10 for each $2.00 wagered. And that was done when it was a day in which we had to settle for a $5.80 and $3.00 key single investment. Most days there are much better payoff you will find today with my 5 BEST BET AND EXOTICS RACE REPORT AVAILABLE RIGHT NOW FOR SATURDAY!

As I said, finding the right horses and then betting them correctly are equally important. I hope this helped answer your question, ED. Keep your questions coming guys, I'll try to get to more of them.
