Arkansas Derby: Oxbow draws outside post in field of 10
Oxbow, who has been plagued by outside posts for much of his 3-year-old season, landed on the outside one again for the Arkansas Derby on Wednesday, when he drew post 10 in a field of 10. The Grade 1, $1 million race will close out the Oaklawn Park meet Saturday.
Oxbow was just edged in the Grade 2, $600,000 Rebel here March 16, a race in which he broke from post 10. One start prior, he broke from post 10 in the Grade 2 Risen Star at Fair Grounds, a race in which he finished fourth.
Oxbow will be ridden by Gary Stevens for the first time in the Arkansas Derby and was made a 5-2 choice on the morning line. D. Wayne Lukas trains Oxbow, who is owned by the Calumet Farm operation of Brad Kelley.
Grade 2 Remsen winner Overanalyze will break right inside of Oxbow in post 9, with Rafael Bejarano to ride for trainer Todd Pletcher. Overanalyze was made a 4-1 choice.
War Academy, a recent Santa Anita allowance winner for trainer Bob Baffert, drew post 2 and was installed as the 2-1 morning-line favorite. Mike Smith has the mount on the horse, who was to arrive at Oaklawn on Wednesday afternoon aboard a flight that also was bringing his stablemate, Den’s Legacy, to town for the Arkansas Derby.
Rushaway Stakes runner-up Divine Ambition was a surprise entrant and drew post 3. He is on the also-eligible list for the Grade 1, $750,000 Blue Grass, which also will be run Saturday, at Keeneland.
