Belmont Stakes: Orb draws post 5, Oxbow will start from gate 7
Kentucky Derby winner Orb drew post 5 and Preakness winner Oxbow was assigned post 7 when a field of 14 was entered for the 145th Belmont Stakes on Wednesday morning.
Orb was made the 3-1 Belmont Stakes favorite and Oxbow was listed as the third choice at 5-1. Louisiana Derby winner Revolutionary is the second betting choice at 9-2.
Other leading contenders for Saturday’s Grade 1, $1 million Belmont stakes at Belmont Park include Kentucky Derby runner-up Golden Soul (post 14), Arkansas Derby winner Overanalyze (post 3), Louisiana Derby winner Revolutionary (post 9), Peter Pan winner Freedom Child (post 2), and the filly Unlimited Budget (post 13).
Orb, trained by Shug McGaughey, rallied from far back to win the Kentucky Derby over a sloppy track by 2 1/2 lengths. He returned to finish fourth, beaten nine lengths, as the 7-10 favorite in the Preakness after breaking from post 1. Joel Rosario will once again be aboard on Saturday.
Oxbow, tired to finish sixth in the Kentucky Derby after racing close to a fast pace. He was taken to the lead by Gary Stevens in the Preakness and was never headed while winning by 1 3/4 lengths at 15-1. Oxbow is trained by D. Wayne Lukas and Stevens has the mount.
