SPA SHOTS - NOTES ON PREVIOUS DAY RACING

Wednesday, July 27

RACE 1 - Steeplechase Race

RACE 2 - 40K Maiden Claimer - 6 1/2 Furlongs - 3 YO-Up
Fact that FEAR THAT ($26.60) as part of a Nick Zito (6% last year) entry and defeated by 21 lengths at 25-1 at the same level in his previous race pulled away to a 5 ½ length victory in the lane despite navigating the final 1/16th of a mile in 7 seconds tells you everything you need to know about the rest. The winner did add blinkers but so did the other half and that one was up the track.

RACE 3 - 14K Claimer - NW3L - 6 ½ Furlongs - 3 YO-Up
The last two times CONSCIENCE ($3.50) raced on dirt he was 3rd vs 35K rivals at Pimlico and second vs 40K foes at Los Alamitos. Trainer Mike Maker dropped to win and the Indian Charlie gelding took control early, dueled a pair of longshots into defeat and was clear of the only other effort in the race, which came from PARX shipper TO THE VICTOR who rallied late. The winner was taken by George Weaver and the runner-up by Gary Contessa. CONSCIENCE will handle a bump up and TO THE VICTOR will beat this kind soon.

RACE 4 - 1 1/8 Miles - NW2X Allowance/Optional 62.5K Claimer - 3 YO-Up F & M
In short 6 runner field 1-2 favorite GOING FOR BROKE and 7.5-1 longshot RACHEL'S TEMPER were last and fifth at the 5/8ths marker. They began to hook up in the lane and the favored eked out a nose decision over the runner-up, who turned in a game effort. It was 4 /34 lengths back to pace-setter JULES AND ROME, who had little left in the lane despite turning in even 24 second fractions for the first 3 quarters. RACHEL'S TEMPER was taken for the 62.5K by sharp trainer Charlton Baker and JULES AND ROME was also haltered for the big price by equally adroit trainer Rudy Rodriguez.

RACE 5 - 5 ½ Furlong Turf - MSW - 2 YO Fillies
With Forest Boyce in the irons for Graham Motion and a number of high priced yearling purchase juveniles in the field it is easy to see how this daughter of Discreetly Mine slipped past bettors. However, SAFE WITH ME ($34.60) but did so despite being blocked behind a trio of rivals before aggressively creating a seam to get through late. She has a future. First time starter AIKENETTA was in forward position throughout and won't be a maiden long while MARE IRISH DANCER has to wait on the rail for room and rallied well when clear and CONQUEST BAD GIRL lost all chance when she had another troubled trip, her second in two career starts.

RACE 6 - 7 Furlongs - MSW - 3 YO-Up F & M
In a race inhabited by only 7 fillies travelling 7 furlongs only one (with three starts) had more than two career starts. Barclay Tagg's TALE OF RUBY made her first start since December at Gulfstream and in career start number three won as the second favorite ($6.50) from just off the pace set by THEATRICAL, who faded to last. The rest, including 6-5 favorite BLENHEIM PALACE more or less ran in place as the winner was 4 ¾ lengths clear.

RACE 7 - 5 ½ Furlongs Turf - NW2X Allowance/Optional 40K Claimer - 3 YO-Up F & M
In perhaps the most competitive race of the day ASSET INFLATION might have had the slight class edge and got the job done at $8.70. She was perfectly handled along the inside by Irad Ortiz, Jr. who waited before going after pace setter POLAR AXIS in the lane. Once the winner put her head in front POLER continued battling to lose by a length and hold off a fast closing FRISKY MAGICIAN who changed style from a pressing turf sprinter to closer. SUMMER BREEZING was steadied when looking for room and might be a timely claim by Jeremiah Englehart while DRAFT DAY was sent off the favorite in first race since October and offered up little threat.

RACE 8 - Honorable Miss Handicap - 6 Furlongs - 3 YO-Up - F & M
For a stakes race that featured a small but solid field of runners it turned into a two distaffer affair. Favored PAULASSILVERLINING and HAVEYOUGONEAWAY separated themselves by 12 lengths from the rest by the furlong marker with the latter ($9.40) edging out the former. The biggest disappointment was BAR OF GOLD who appeared in hand as she moved toward the leaders off the turn, engaged them as they straightened away and then suddenly dropped back to the rear as something went amiss.

RACE 9 - 5 ½ Furlongs Turf - NW2X Allowance/Optional 62.5K Claimer - 3 YO-Up F & M
Delaware shipper SANCTIFICA ($36.40) pressed the pace in second before taking over and Monmouth shipper TWO PUMP at 17-1 rallied from off the pace to complete the $472.40 Exacta as Churchill shipper JUST A LADY gave way grudgingly after setting the pace. The logical favorites SPECTACULAR ME and (especially) TENT CITY were in striking position and moving well when eliminated by a troubled SEEKING PARADISE who bumped with both out of the gate and again in the stretch. SEEKING PARADISE was disqualified and placed behind both. If they write this condition again during the meet you can come back with each.
